BA7
Now that Its getting on a bit in the holiday and I think I've done enough miscellaneous practicing, although I'll likely still be uploading pieces that I'm working on to help with documentation on technical skills to help fill in some space but also show a clear line of practice and independent learning towards my BA8
For my BA7 itself I'm further developing the science fiction setting from my BA6, while on my BA6 I only focused on a single planet the idea for BA7 is to branch this out into setting with a clear narrative and system of events for a science-fiction setting that could be potentially used as the grounding for a video games or another media based production. My personal aim through this is term of development is to present this long term through illustration and concept art. My main focus will be on military technology and infrastructure.
I will be doing extensive research into classic science fiction, focusing on literature. World War II due the huge amount of technological advancement that was seen during its time, as well a lot of the experimental technology that was never fully put into production, following this other major conflicts such as the Vietnam War and Cold the War. Which also were instrumental into the technological advances modern combat benefits from today and taking this further.
The primary point of interest and narrative for the narrative is the use of genetic engineering, and how in this setting it has been used extensively to allow the colonization of planets that would have been hostile or unsuitable for currant human habitation. Through genetic engineering off shoot races of humans now exist and by this point in time have divided from a central unifying government into multiple independent factions and empires. The project is set to be somewhere within 26-28th century and primarily outside the sol system and into the larger surrounding galaxy.
One of the key personal goals of my project is to refrain from looking at video games for inspiration and instead to try to use primary resources and research as much as possible.

Line Art
So in response to one of the tutorials I uploaded a few days back was that for concept art what people love to see in your portfolio is line art. This is not something I do very often, but if I was to get a job a junior artist its likely I'd be building detailed line art of a senior artists block out to start with, so I've decried to do some attempts, I'm hoping going the Imperial war museum will help me get some sources for exposed mechanics and the like.
Plan to upload a few more. I'm mainly using a quick low opacity block out as a starting point, although I think should be more neutral with backgrounds as this time it has obscured the original blockout.

Space Battle
Three hour speed paint. I started with a quick and rough wash of colour I was intending for a sun to be behind the planet, so the part showing would be during the planets night cycles so I used a basic brush with a high spacing to put in some lights indicating large settlements and cities on the surface, which using a couple of texture brushes to build in continents.

The following screencap is a fair bit forwards in the progress of the painting. I had touched up the planet blow and roughly put in the light from behind the planet, I was overall trying to create a very rough and loose piece that while retuning those qualities I would be able to convey atmosphere without over detailing. I starting working on the ship simply by blocking in shapes, it took me a while to work out that I'd have to be working with brighter colours for a base otherwise it was difficult to keep track of them due to the surface. Which the larger vessels that were that were closer I worked in some simple details, I considered applying the same details to the fighter squadron in the foreground but decided against it since they are in motion and helped keep the feel of the piece. Using a texture brush from earlier I started working explosions and flack to help make the scene more busy and chaotic reminiscent to WWII Air battles.
On the final pass I added in some more details such a clearer horizon from the light source behind the planet as well as distant stars. I also went over the lights on the surface making them brighter however in retrospect I feel I chose the wrong colour since its looks like surface explosions which I feel overpower the piece. I added in some more fighters and jet trails from fighter craft dog fighting adding to the intensity of the battle. I helped making the explosions "pop" more by adding a brighter centre I found this also created a sense of time with explosions without this touch up happening moments ago where as these ones were fighters exploiting and flack detonating
